Native American Style 5 Hole Flute - Hand made in Key of F# This unique hand-crafted 5 hole flute is a mid range flute that has a clear sweet sound. Key of F# is one of the most popular keys to play. This flute is 22.5" long with a 7/8" diamet er sound chamber, to which 3 coats of Shellac has been applied to seal it and improve the clarity of sound. Shellac is non-toxic when dry. The wood is Select Pine from New Zealand with 2 coats of custom redwood stain that gives it a deep red color. Three coats of hand rubbed Tung Oil give the exterior a high polished look. Tung oil creates a very hard and durable finish, which is also non-toxic. The Fetish is also pine and is a replica, I created, of a broken arrow. I also wood burned some Anasazi symbols into the flute and hand painted some Anasazi symbols using the colors black, red, yellow, and turquoise. A leather strap ties the fetish to the flute, and reproduction sinew complete the decorations. The Anasazi used deer sinew on their flutes. The Anasazi were master flute builders and players over 1,000 years ago. Each flute I make is unique and takes on average about 4 days to build. I am recently retired and for a new adventure have decided to start offering my hand-made flutes. The difference is that I am donating 100% of the proceeds to the American Cancer Society. Cancer has deeply touched my family and I want to do something creative to give back. I make each flute in my woodshop using some power tools, but many hand tools that I inherited from my master carpenter grandfather. Using the same hand tools that my grandfather used is very special to me. My favorite tool to use is his Bailey's Nos. 35 wooden block hand plane made in 1912 to hand plane each flute. Many flutes are made on lathes and are cookie-cutter in shape. Hand planing makes each flute unique. I hand sand with 4 different grit papers, hand stain, and finally hand rub the Tung Oil finish. I can offer these flutes a bit cheaper because I am not trying to make a profit. This is my hobby and do it for enjoyment and for charity. This flute is not quite concert quality but is very close. I have tuned it using a chromatic tuner to within 0-7 cent on the meter. Plays pentatonic scale of F#, A, B, C#, (D), E, F#. They are just fun to play, are a great conversation piece, and make a great display. To see how I build these flutes v isit my facebook page !!
